How Bradley Cooper Met Lady Gaga: A Star Is Born
In “A Star Is Born,” Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga fuse their considerable talents to depict the raw and passionate tale of Jack and Ally, two artistic souls coming together, on stage and in life. Theirs is a complex journey through the beauty and the heartbreak of a relationship struggling to survive.
In this new take on the iconic love story, four-time Oscar nominee Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”), makes his directorial debut, and also stars alongside multiple award-winning, Oscar-nominated music superstar Gaga in her first leading role in a major motion picture. Cooper portrays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with struggling artist Ally. She has given up on her dream to become a successful singer, until she meets Jack, who immediately sees her natural talent…
Lady Gaga has been nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for her performance as Ally. A “Star Is Born” is also up for best picture, Cooper for Best Actor with Sam Elliott up for best supporting actor, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Mixing. This is incredibly the 91st year of the Academy Awards which is being held on the 24th of February at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
In addition to playing Ally, Gaga—who earned an Oscar nod for the song “Til It Happens to You” from the film “The Hunting Ground”—performs original songs in the film with Cooper, which they wrote with a handful of artists, including Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson. The music is original and all vocals for the movie were recorded live during filming, whilst the screenplay was written by Oscar winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) and Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters.
Cooper’s behind-the-scenes team included Oscar-nominated director of photography Matthew Libatique (“Black Swan”), production designer Karen Murphy (“The Light Between Oceans”), three-time Oscar-nominated editor Jay Cassidy (“American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Into the Wild”), and costume designer Erin Benach (“Loving”).
Similarly to the scene where they meet in the film, Cooper and Lady Gaga met when she was singing ‘La Vie en Rose’ at a friends Hollywood home for a cancer fund raiser. Cooper then called her up the very next day, whereupon they met at her house and bonded over leftover Italian food. They developed a mutual trust and close friendship during the development and filming of “A Star Is Born”, particularly as Cooper had never sung before and Gaga never acted in a major motion picture. It was Lady gaga who convinced Cooper that he should sing the songs himself and not use a voice over. They both took a major step out of their comfort zones to make this film, but the results are quite phenomenal.
They are up against stiff competition in the Academy Awards this year, but there is a lot of very serious talent in this dramatic musical extravaganza so we expect them to do very well. Perhaps next year we might see them act together in the Hangover Part 4, only this time they sing their way back to sobriety and redemption.
